A Message from our SMS Principal

October 11 - 16, 2021

Principal’s Message:

We are in the third week of the 2nd Six-Weeks grading period. Progress reports will be finalized this Friday, October 15th by 4:00 p.m. Encourage your students to turn in all their assignments and keep up with their AR points. Stress to your students that good grades are a major factor in determining future success.
As of today, Monday, October 11, 2021, our enrollment at South Middle School is as follows: 376 6th graders, 417 7th graders, and 423 8th graders for a total of 1216 students.
Our SMS Tutorial Program began last week with After-School Tutoring Monday through Thursday from 4:15 – 5:15 p.m. The first day of Saturday Tutoring will be this Saturday, October 16th from 7:45 a.m. - 12:00 noon with breakfast and lunch served. Parent Permission slips for After-School and Saturday Tutoring will continue to be given out by teachers this week. Students and Parents may also pick up Tutoring Permission slips in the front office. South Middle School has had a STRONG tutoring program for many years and encourages students and their parents to take advantage of the extra help from our exemplary teachers. Please speak to our Testing/Tutorial Facilitator, Mrs. Caren Deaton, Curriculum Assistant, Mrs. Catherine Salazar, or our Head Counselor, Mr. Joe Martinez, if you have any questions about our SMS Tutoring Program.
Good luck to all our girls’ basketball and boy’s baseball team players this week. We are proud of you! Thank you coaches for all your hard work and dedication to our SMS fine athletes!
ECISD/SMS will be offering After School Dinner Meals Monday through Friday from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. Students will be served an entrée, one vegetable, one fruit and their choice of milk. Students are encouraged to go daily to pick up their meal before going home or to their SMS after school activities.
Parents, this is a reminder that the drop-off/pick-up area is located on the west side of the campus. The east side fenced in parking lot is for SMS staff parking and school bus traffic only. The front office parking area is for Special Education buses and the parents of our students with special needs. Please abide by these SMS traffic/parking guidelines to ensure the safety of all our students. We have supervision in our SMS Gym as early as 7:00 a.m. with breakfast in student’s 1st period classroom at 7:50 a.m. Please drop your students off as early as possible after 7:00 a.m. to avoid the drop-off line that begins around 7:35 a.m. We would like students seated in their classrooms, ready for instruction, by 8:15 a.m.
